My XR6 EF is manual and had a performance clutch fitted before I bought the car. I had to get the firewall welded and reinforced where it cracked...a common occurance....but now the standard clutch cable only seems to last 12 months before breaking. Does anyone know if a heavy duty clutch cable is available for manual EF XR's, or of hydraulic conversion kits?

The first production example of the exciting new Ford Focus RS has rolled off the production line at Ford's plant in Saarlouis, Germany.

The 305 PS / 440 Nm top of the range performance version of the Focus extends the flexible production mix at the Saarlouis plant. The German facility already produces the Focus range in three- and five-door hatchback, wagon and sporty ST bodystyles, plus the C-MAX and Kuga models.

The new Focus RS will be available in more than 20 European countries including Russia, with the UK, Switzerland and Germany expected to be the highest volume markets.

The Saarlouis team will build into the car a number of unique exterior and interior design details including new body parts to incorporate wider wheel arches and a wider track, complemented by revised, deeper side rocker mouldings and unique front and rear bumpers.

At the rear a large venturi tunnel and a dramatic rear spoiler create a purposeful look. Such is the exclusivity of the new RS, that customers will have a choice of just three expressive exterior colours: Ultimate Green, Performance Blue and Frozen White.

"We are excited that a new RS-badged Ford performance model is back in our portfolio and that production at Saarlouis is starting on schedule," said John Fleming, Ford of Europe chairman and CEO. "We've had a huge amount of interest in this model from the loyal army of Ford RS enthusiasts as well as potential customers who have never owned an RS before. I am confident that they will fall for it the moment they get behind the wheel."

Ford Focus RS500

I thought I would now vent some steam.

FG XR8 ute purchased new June 09 and not delivered till July 09 now has just turned over 31000 Ks.

1.When buying the ute I was told the fuel flap would lock when you lock the car WRONG, I also ordered alloy ladder bars and was told they would be easily removable WRONG, After collecting the ute I found a small dent in the rear corner of the style side when I first cleaned it when I spoke to the dealership I was told that it must have happened after I took delivery yet the ute had not really gone anywhere that first weekend except to the dump (hence the cleaning as it had been raining)

2. Collected car and had a diff whine before I even got home (was told it was the low profile tyres on different road surfaces at the 3000k service)

3. (Intermittently normally at least once every second day)When answering the phone through the bluetooth the phone will be answered yet it will come up as call ended on the ICC screen and I have to pick up the phone and then this happens everytime untill I switch the car off and start it again.(This is still happening as off today and they have just replaced the module on Tuesday. They have been made aware of this every time the car has been in to them)

4.The diff has been in to be replaced twice.

5.Front drivers side tyre was worn down to the cloth belts on the very inner edge yet the rest of the tyre was perfect as were the other tyres.( I was told this has worn because of going over speed bumps. ) New tyres fitted today to the front and the tyre shop has told there is a huge camber issue (which I already new) and there is no adjustment and I will need to put a camber kit in it.

6.Starter motor is not disengaging early enough even if you just flick the key it keeps winding untill well after the motor is running and sound s terrible.

7.I get condensation from the A/C running over my left foot when turning left and the car now always smells because it also soaks the carpet.

I know I do a lot of Ks but this is getting beyond a joke.

Trips to the dealership
1. 3000k service with the above mentioned diff and phone issues. (1 day)
2. Warranty with the above mentioned phone issues. (1 day)
3. 15000k service with the above mentioned phone issues and the diff whine narrowed down to a speed range of 102-109 kph.(1 day)
4. Diff replacement and the above mentioned phone issues.(1 day)
5. Diff replacement and the above mentioned phone issues. No this is not a misprint.(1 day)
6. 30000k service with the above mentioned phone, tyre and starter motor issues.(1day)

Other related work done.
1. Tow bar fitted off site.(1 day)
2. 2 tyres fitted.(1 day)

Work still to be done
1. New starer motor to be fitted.(expect it to be 1 day)
2. Camber kit.(expect it to be 1 day)

I have put in a complaint to there customer relationship centre (they did not seem to be all that interested) and had no reply to my issues which I will still be following up.

I have previously purchased new in the last ten years.
1 off BA Mk11 XL V8 Barra engine ute (My old ute)
2 off BA XLS 6 cylinder utes (My employees utes)
1 off AU Futura 6 cylinder sedan

I have previously owned.
83 XLT Bronco (Toy)
82 Fairlane (Toy)
77 Falcon ute (Toy/Showcar/Dragcar)
74? Falcon ute (Workhorse)
72? Falcon coupe (Toy)

I currently own
FG XR8 ute nightmare
69 Mercury Cougar Eliminator Ford running gear (Toy)
69 Mustang Sportsroof (Toy under restoration)

As much as I love the blue oval which I am sure you can tell by my past and present garage I am that dis heartened with the above mentioned issues that unless something dramatically changes I can not see me purchasing another new Ford ever again.

As well as being outright lied to it is not good enough to have a new vehicle off the road for 10 days in 8 months.

Ok gone from the boil to a simmer at least until the starter motor goes in on tuesday when I pick up the ute and have phone issues once again no doubt.

In addition, the FPV General Manager Rod Barrett will be present to hopefully divulge some details of upcoming FPV models to the waiting masses.

Thanks to the generosity of Queensland’s Falcon GT clubs, Pacific Ford will also have a stunning display of the first and foremost Australian Muscle Car, with an excellent range of early model Falcon GT’s and late model FPV GT’s due to be displayed on the day, with an estimated 70 GT’s on show. This will be a not to be repeated event for Queensland this year, as the last time Allan Moffat and these Iconic GTHO’s were together was Ford’s year 2000 75th Anniversary celebrations at Geelong, in Victoria.

Pacific Ford’s Falcon GT show entry will be free to the general public, with a gold coin donation putting the donors in the draw at 2.30PM for a Biante diecast 1:18 scale model of a Moffat Falcon GTHO, personally signed and handed over by Allan Moffat, with all proceeds going to local charities.

A brief history of the “Moffat” GTHO’s

Phase I…. the only surviving Ford factory racecar, this was the first GTHO to win a race and has the best racing history of the 4 vehicles.

Phase II…. This car was Moffat’s entry ticket to Bathurst glory, with a win in ’70, his first solo drive, and was never raced again.

Phase III…. raced in ’72 this HO had the dubious distinction of being stolen out of Bob Stillwell’s Adelaide Ford dealership showroom, before going on to win the ’73 ATCC Championship.

Phase IV…. the rarest most collectable Australian muscle car of all time, one of 3 ½ built before Ford backed down over the supercar controversy. This was the first one built and the only surviving Phase IV on display, but was never homologated to race.

We will release further information as we get closer to the day however if you have any questions please send me an email plus if you know a GT owner who may want to offer their vehicle for display please make contact with us. This is building to be a memorable day so mark it down on your calendar and spread the word. We look forward to seeing you on the day.

Regards,
Greg Manchester
Branch Manager

Maroochydore

RICHO GETS RUBBER

By Briar Gunther
4:43 PM Thu 11 February, 2010
Source: BigPond Sport
http://www.v8supercars.com.au/richo-gets-rubber/tabid/70/newsid/9599/default.aspx

Dunlop, the official tyre of the V8 Supercars, will have even more branding on track with the announcement the company will sponsor Steve Richards’ Ford Performance Racing (FPR) Falcon.

Richo’s car will be known as the Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon and he is keen to put 2009 behind him.

“Personally I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

“I’ve done a lot of work with Dunlop Super Dealers over the years, so to have my car emblazoned with their colours is brilliant.

“I’m definitely looking forward to the new season; I’m expecting the Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon will be a contender this year.”

FPR Team Principal, Tim Edwards, said Dunlop has been a proud and active sponsor of FPR since it began in 2002.

“So to see a fully livered Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon on the track in 2010 reflects the value we both hold in this relationship,” he said.

“It’s pleasing to see an existing, blue chip sponsor stepping up to take on naming entitlements.

“In many ways it’s a logical step; Dunlop is obviously aware of the commercial advantages of owning a competitive car. We can now take this long standing support to the next level.”

Dunlop Tyres’ Marketing Vice President, Phillip Cavagna, said the Dunlop Super Dealer sponsorship was a first for the tyre retailer.

“This partnership marks the first time the Dunlop Super Dealer retail network has come together to be involved in the V8 Supercar Championship Series,” he said.

“We are extremely excited to be the naming-rights sponsor on Steven Richards’ #6 Ford Performance Racing Falcon for the 2010 Series, as well as to have Dunlop continue our ongoing partnership of the entire FPR team.

“Dunlop is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high and ultra high performance tyres with an impressive track record of motorsport success, so Ford Performance Racing is a great fit for our brand.”

Cavagna said it also reinforces Dunlop’s longstanding relationship with Ford Australia and Ford Performance Vehicles to engineer and supply original equipment tyres for the new road cars.

“Taking over the naming rights of Steven Richards’ FPR Ford Falcon is a perfect fit for the tyre dealer as the popular driver has been an ambassador to the business for several years,” he said.

Richo ran a blank livery at the test day for Victorian teams at Winton Motor Raceway on Monday.

The Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon will make its track debut at the opening event of the 2010 V8 Supercar Championship, the Yas V8 400, which takes place next week starting February 18.

Stone Brothers Racing (SBR) has restructured its operations in a bid to return to the front of the V8 Supercar field for 2010.
David Stuart, who was SBR’s team manager last year, also takes up race engineering duties on Alex Davison’s #4 Irwin Racing Falcon this year.

Unlike last year when Jason Bright’s SBR-prepped Falcon was separated from the other two SBR cars in pitlane, this year the three SBR entries for Davison, Shane Van Gisbergen (#9) and Tim Slade (#47) will be stationed together.

Stuart said Davison’s driving talents combined with improved machinery should turn into results for SBR in 2010.

“We will be far more effective in the workshop and at the track with all three groups working in a cohesive unit,” he said.

“Last year this was not the case with one of the Stone Brothers Racing cars at the other end of the pits.

“I have to say that the new way of doing things has worked really well and the feeling of excitement this year is right up there. We are keen for that to continue the entire season.”

The 2010 livery for the #4 Falcon has just been unveiled and Davison, who finished second in the 200km race at Hidden Valley last year, is aiming to finish at the pointy end consistently this year.

“Last year the Irwin Racing team showed that we can be right on the pace, but we have to do that more consistently in 2010,” he said.

“We took a good look at ourselves at the end of 2009 and have really focussed on improving things across the board.

“This year the Irwin Racing team has the experience of a full season with myself and the FG Falcon, so we are keen to show that with performances on the track.”

Davison, who also wants to focus on qualifying well this year, said he was looking forward to working with Stuart.

“He did some great things with Jason Bright in the second half of last year and I worked with him during the long distance races a few years back at Dick Johnson Racing,” Davison said.

“We are both very driven people and have become good friends, so together we are looking at going to the next level.

“My goals this year include qualifying consistently in the top 10.

“The Irwin Racing team’s best overall results last year came from weekends when we started towards the front.

“I believe our race pace will also improve and that will bring better results and a championship position inside the top 10.”

Ross Stone said the Irwin Racing team is ready for the first test next week at Queensland Raceway.

“And we want to hit the track running from the opening practice session in Abu Dhabi,” he said.

“I know that Alex has a lot of experience in different categories, but last year really was his rookie year in the V8s.

“We are sure he will use that experience to really put some solid results on the board in 2010.”

Stone said Stuart will continue to act as the team manager while also taking on the race engineering duties on the Irwin Racing Ford.

“We have changed our set-up in the workshop with the Irwin Racing Falcon, as well as our other two Stone Brothers Racing entries all working closer together under David’s leadership,” he said.

“At race meetings the three cars will all be together, with David overseeing things, and ensuring Alex is looked after on the track.

“Our goal for Alex in the championship is top-12, which might sound conservative. I know that our machinery is good and his ability behind the wheel is right up there, but this is a very tough series.”

The 2010 colour scheme of Davison’s Falcon aligns with the updated Irwin Tools logo, which was also announced today (Monday).

Irwin Tools Asia Pacific Managing Director, Nick Prichard, said even though the new logo is only a minor adjustment to the other version, it modernises the brand’s look.

“All regions of the world will transition to this new look in 2010 and this will really help us with consistency while giving the Irwin Tools logo a fresh new look,” he said.

“Thanks to our V8 Supercar program with Alex Davison and Stone Brothers Racing we can really promote the new logo to the public.

“Like Alex and the SBR team, here at Irwin we share a passion for success and quality in everything we do.”

http://www.v8supercars.com.au/content/hero_news/february_2010/sbr_restructure_aids_davison/

Gday, I have a TomTom navigator and am curious about the read out in relation to the speed I am traveling. My speedometer reads that I am going faster than the navigator calculates. As I have an XR dash and 17" wheels on a standard BA wagon, which has been lowered, could the speedo be out? Do I need to have it calibrated and if so, where do I go to have this done? I used to notice a slight difference with my EL and the TomTom but with the wagon it is a much larger gap, around 10-15 kms at 100-110kms per hour.

Has anyone seen the news about the changes Ford are wanting to make? They are talking about making a 'global' car, something along the lines of the Taurus which was not a huge seller in Australia due to it being front wheel drive. Although there is a possibility they may globally produce a rear wheel drive car.
Talks still happening, decisions not needed until next year. Changes won't happen until 2014/15.
Do people also realise that the reduced Falcon sales in Australia were due mostly to the government rebate given if a Holden was purchased? I think this factor has been forgotten and why was Holden given a helping hand when Ford Australia is just as 'Aussie' as Holden?
Interested in what people have to say...http://money.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=993024

The law coming in the opposite direction(100 meters)away in a unmarked car decides to pull me over, no questions asked just "wheres ya licence" gave it to him, walks away, comes back, gives me a "your a dickhead and what do ya think ya doin" lecture but just a little to much. I agree to what he says, and at the same time telling myself to just keep my mouth shut, smile, nod ya head and agree and this guy will go away. No ticket, just a server verbel bollocking. I've built many mustangs (mostly Fox Body cars). I love going fast. My current build is an 85 coupe with everything from a 92 GT. Every wire, nut, bolt- everything. I have many mods including an intercooled procharger. I't very fun to drive! Nothing more fun to drop down a gear at 80 MPH and smoke'em down while driving sideways!

We have owned the car for around 4 weeks now and just wanted to bring the car up a notch. Well we started with a dyno reading of 184 and finished with 204.2. (Gotta be happy with that) The guys that serviced the car were fantastic. We have also put two new tyres on the car and had the leather interior rejuvenated. We feel we have picked up an absolute bargain with car, as we picked it up for $20k and have only spend $2.5k to refreshen it (That included perspnalised number plates). Now all Mark needs to do is give it a really good detailing to be totally happy.

Press Release: November 30th 2009

The 2011 Ford Mustang puts 305 high-performance horses in the hands of V-6 coupe buyers with a new all-aluminum dual-overhead cam (DOHC) engine that delivers a projected 30 mpg on the highway with a six-speed automatic transmission and fun for drivers on nearly every road.

For 2011, Mustang’s new 3.7-liter Duratec 24-valve V-6 uses advanced engineering to deliver its power and economy: Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds. Aluminum construction means light weight. It’s an engine designed to crank out torque down low, rev to 7,000 rpm and deliver the mechanical music sports coupe lovers crave everywhere in between.

“Mustang is completely transformed with this new engine,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “Everything people love about the car is still there and now under the hood is a V-6 engine that uses premium technology to deliver the power, the feel, the fuel efficiency, even the sound of the best sports coupes in the world.”

New 3.7-liter V-6 engine
With Ti-VCT operating its four valves per cylinder, the new Mustang V-6 powerplant sends significantly more horsepower and torque (305 hp and 280 ft.-lb.) to the rear wheels than its predecessor – despite its smaller displacement. The behind-the-wheel feel is unlike any Mustang ever produced.

“This new V-6 engine really speaks to what Mustang is all about,” said Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of global powertrain engineering. “It produces power everywhere in the rev range and loves to be pushed hard. The Duratec 3.7-liter builds on our promise to use advanced technology to deliver both power and fuel economy.”

The high output is due largely to Ti-VCT which allows variable control of valve operation across the rev range. The variable cams operate on a Direct Acting Mechanical Bucket (DAMB) valvetrain using polished buckets and roller finger followers to reduce friction. The end result is as much as a 3 percent improvement in fuel economy and a 10 percent improvement in power output versus traditional engines without these advanced features.

Ti-VCT is complemented by special-tuned composite upper and lower intake manifolds for efficient air delivery and lighter weight. Ignition power is delivered by a high-energy coil-on-plug design, while piston-cooling jets and a lightweight die-cast aluminum cylinder block improve the durability and efficiency of the 3.7-liter V-6 design.

Performance was the mantra for every aspect of engine design. A cold air induction system and dual exhaust give the 3.7 its free-breathing style with a 7,000 rpm redline and near-instantaneous response to throttle inputs.

A die-cast aluminum deep-sump oil pan provides 10,000-mile oil change intervals, saving drivers money on maintenance and resulting in less waste in oil disposal.

Engineers also worked to ensure aggressive, high-performance sounds come from the new engine, from intake to exhaust. Not only does the retuned air intake system minimize losses, it also provides the driver with a satisfying intake rush on hard acceleration. The all-new dual exhaust system is mellow at idle but opens up with a howl at full-tilt, letting Mustang drivers know they’re behind the wheel of a world-class sports coupe.

“This car marks a new type of Mustang,” said David Pericak, Mustang chief nameplate engineer. “We’re using a high-performance quad-cam V-6 with all the bells and whistles in a car that’s become legendary for its handling and roadholding; it’s really going to get a lot of new sports coupe fans excited about Mustang, some for the first time ever.”

Powertrain improvements
Drivers can get the most out of the new V-6 engine’s output using either an all-new six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission. Both come with the flexibility and fuel economy benefits of six forward ratios regardless of whether buyers want to shift for themselves or not.

Drivers who prefer a manual gearbox will enjoy the short throws and direct feel of the shifter along with the relaxed cruising permitted by the extra top gear ratio. Customers choosing the automatic will be pleasantly surprised to find the advanced six-speed 6R60 transmission does not sacrifice fuel economy – or performance – for convenience, delivering an expected 30 mpg highway with crisp, quick shifts that maximize torque and horsepower.

The automatic transmission also features a grade-assist or “hill mode” to improve drivability on hilly terrain. This technical innovation uses vehicle input – acceleration, pedal position, vehicle speed and brake status – to automatically determine the correct gear ratio while on an incline or decline. Hill mode eliminates sixth gear, extends lower gear operation on uphill climbs, and provides additional grade or engine braking for coast downs.

The standard 2.73 rear axle provides an ideal blend of cruising fuel economy and acceleration, aided by the wide ratio spread permitted through the use of six forward speeds in the gearboxes. Performance enthusiasts can select an available 3.31 rear axle ratio for better off-the-line launch characteristics.

Fuel economy improvements
Extra horsepower and refined engine operation will be the most noticeable features to new 2011 Mustang 3.7-liter V-6 buyers while projected class-leading fuel economy, also a standard feature, offers an additional bonus. The numbers speak for themselves:

19 mpg city/30 highway with six-speed automatic transmission, up from 16 mpg city/24 highway on the 2010 model with automatic – a 25 percent improvement over 2010
18 mpg city/29 highway with six-speed manual transmission, up from 18 mpg city/26 highway on the 2010 model with manual
Refinements throughout Mustang’s body, powertrain and chassis design contribute to the improved fuel economy numbers. Examples include:

* The new Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system which eliminates the drag of an engine-operated hydraulic power steering pump
* Six-speed transmissions that allow lower cruising revs without sacrificing off-the-line performance
* Aerodynamic improvements such as a new front fascia, tire spats on the rear wheels, modified underbody shields, a taller air dam and an added rear decklid seal

Handling and driving dynamics
With so much additional horsepower standard, the 2011 Mustang received enhancements to its chassis to maintain the outstanding balance and driving behavior Mustang owners expect. Damper tuning and spring rates were revised to provide a smooth highway ride while a new rear lower control arm and stiffened stabilizer bar bushings improve stiffness and handling for better cornering response.

While Mustang’s aerodynamic improvements were designed mainly to improve fuel economy, engineers also adjusted the vehicle’s front/rear lift balance. The result is a car that tracks more securely and feels more “planted” to the road surface at higher speeds, helping to keep the tires in better contact with the pavement.

The addition of EPAS marks a new era in driving dynamics for Mustang owners. Steering effort at parking lot speeds is reduced, while high-speed and highway feel is improved for more precise steering and handling. Because the belt-driven power steering pump is eliminated, EPAS provides a quieter vehicle with fewer components drawing engine power.

EPAS also enables new technologies that adjust for minor driving annoyances. Pull-Drift Compensation adjusts the steering to correct for crosswinds and minor road crowning, while Active Nibble Control helps eliminate the “shimmy” felt at high speeds when a wheel is out of balance or a brake rotor is warped. Both conditions are alleviated by EPAS independent of driver input, helping ensure Mustang delivers a smooth, comfortable driving experience in all conditions.

Mustang buyers choosing the new V-6 will also get a standard limited-slip differential that provides better handling and more sure-footed grip in poor weather conditions by directing engine torque to the rear wheel with the most traction. When the time comes to slow things down, the 2011 Mustang is also equipped with larger four-wheel ABS disc brakes, with 11.5 inch front and 11.8 inch rear rotors.

Refinements complement advanced features
To reinforce the sporty nature of the 2011 Mustang, all V-6 models will come standard with new instrument cluster graphics, including a speedometer that reads up to 160 mph and a tachometer that reads to 8,000 rpm, reflecting the free-revving style of the new engine.

Additional lightweight soundproofing measures help filter unpleasant, high-frequency noises while tuned intake and dual exhaust add the sounds Mustang buyers relish.

Occupants also benefit from new door seals and a rear wheel arch liner that reduce road noise for a quieter, more enjoyable drive, all with minimal weight gain compared to the 2010 model.

Enthusiasts who want a premium performance-oriented Mustang V-6 can opt for the new Performance Package, which will be available August 2010. Designed for driving enthusiasts, the Mustang V-6 Performance Package comprises:

* A 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration
* Firmer Mustang GT suspension
* 19-inch wheels
* Summer performance tires for improved grip
* A strut tower brace for increased chassis rigidity
* Unique electronic stability control calibration with sport mode for performance driving

For 2011, Mustang also ups the ante on technology and convenience features, including a standard driver’s message center in the instrument cluster and integrated blind-spot mirrors in the side-view mirror housings.

Ford’s MyKey™ system, designed to encourage safer teen driving and safety belt use, also is newly available on Mustang. MyKey allows owners to program the vehicle key using the driver’s message center to incorporate features such as limited top vehicle speed and audio volume, a traction control system that cannot be deactivated, a persistent Belt-Minder® safety belt reminder and various speed alert chimes.

Top safety marks expected
Mustang’s technological advances are also incorporated in the structure of the vehicle to improve safety. The 2010 Mustang coupe earned the U.S. government’s top five-star crash-test rating, a designation the 2011 model is expected to achieve.

The Mustang’s considerable body stiffness contributes to the coupe and convertible’s driving performance and has a parallel benefit in accident protection. While the coupe’s body structure is approximately 31 percent stiffer than the previous Mustang platform, the convertible’s is more than twice as stiff – creating a structure that helps protect the cabin from deformation and intrusion in an impact.

Mustang also uses high-strength steel in its body structure and ultra-high-strength steel in the door intrusion beams for additional side-impact protection.

The front structure’s crush zones are computer-designed to absorb energy in a controlled manner and help dissipate it before it can reach the passenger compartment. Ford engineers have run thousands of design iterations of the Mustang’s front rails to arrive at an octagonal shape that helps spread crash forces evenly to aid in protecting occupants.

State-of-the-art technology adds to the convenience and safety of the 2011 Mustang, from the availability of the latest version of Ford SYNC®, with applications such as Traffic, Directions and Information, 911 Assist™ and Vehicle Health Report, to standard AdvanceTrac® Electronic Stability Control, which complements the all-speed traction control and standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

Additional standard safety equipment includes the Personal Safety System™ which features dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, safety belt pretensioners and Belt-Minder.

The 2011 Mustang will be built at the Auto Alliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The new 3.7-liter V-6 will be built at Ford’s recently retooled Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1.

Source: Ford Motor Company

By Courtney Force, special for USA TODAY
Editor's note: NHRA driver Courtney Force will document her summer on the drag-racing circuit in an online diary for USA TODAY:

We had a great race in Chicago. We did well in qualifying, No. 8 and in the top half of the field. It started raining before eliminations on Sunday so our schedule got moved around. I didn't make my first run until almost 3:30 when I was supposed to run at 9 a.m. That is a long time to try and stay focused when you are ready to race.

STANDINGS: Updated NHRA points

I beat Joey Severance from Spanaway, Wash., in the first round. It was a big boost for my team. In the second round I raced Michael Manners from Willis, Texas. He was the No. 1 qualifier and I beat him on a holeshot, which was awesome to win a round for my team. I was heading to the semifinals for the first time in Top Alcohol Dragster. Unfortunately in the semis as soon as I hit the throttle I dropped a cylinder and pedaled it, but it couldn't make enough power to keep up with Jim Whiteley, from Grand Junction, Colo. He went on to win the race.

My sister Ashley Force Hood made it to another final with her Castrol GTX Mustang and my teammates Mike Neff and Robert Hight also had great weekends with their Ford Drive One and Auto Club Mustangs. Mike beat my dad, John Force, in the second round in Funny Car before he lost to Ashley in the semis. It was great to be personally going rounds Sunday and watching all the Funny Cars win, too.

Overall it was a fun weekend and I was pretty busy. In addition to racing I spent a lot of time with the fans every day. I signed a ton of autographs at the BrandSource booth and on Saturday morning I filmed a video for my YouTube channel talking about the Ford Fiesta Movement. One of the highlights of my weekend was talking with Brian Wolfe and Jesse Kershaw from Ford Racing. They have been very supportive of me and my racing development. I know they are even busier than me so for them to spend a few minutes talking racing was very encouraging.

I've been at a race track every weekend since I got out of school. I don't know if it is good or bad that I get to spend so much more time with my family during the rain delays. I am kidding it is really great to be able to hang out and spend time together. It is fun racing with my dad and my sisters I love to do that. I really appreciate my dad and mom giving me the chance to chase this dream and for all the sponsor support I get from Sanyo, BrandSource, Castrol, Auto Club, and Ford. All those companies contribute to our team give me the chance to race. It has been unbelievable and such a great learning experience.

I have gotten into a better routine every year that I have raced. Now that Brittany and I have our own teams it is easier for both of us to develop our own routines. We don't have to alternate races and we can work better with our teams.

Depending on when we get our last qualifying run in each day I always like to stay around and support our Funny Cars. My dad and my sister are always out early in the morning watching me qualify. We are all out here early and we leave late. When we are all done we try to get to the hotel as fast as we can and then get some rest. I don't like to go to bed any later than 11 p.m., and my dad has always said you really need to get eight hours of sleep to be at the top of your game and well rested.

When I get out to the track I check in with my crew chief, Jerry Darien, then I'll go into my lounge to relax before I run. I might have some coffee or get something light to eat. When we pull out of our pits, I'll be on my iPod and we go right to the staging lanes. We try and keep it pretty mellow. Dad likes to jump up on energy and get all hyped up. I think all us girls — Ashley, Brittany and myself — are just the opposite. We find our energy in a different way by being relaxed and being calm.

I have a couple different playlists on my iPod. My music changes as I get closer to racing. When I am in the trailer the music is much more relaxing. The second I get in my tow vehicle I switch to some loud rocking music. I'll listen to Bush, Nickelback, or a couple songs from the Driven soundtrack. I know that is an Indy car movie but the music is pretty good for drag racing. I also like Go Hard or Go Home by the Formula Project. I put a playlist together of all the songs that remind me of racing.

With such a busy racing schedule, you can only imagine how hectic it was when we had our show, Driving Force. That was a lot of fun to do with my family. The producers always wanted to film us together. It was interesting to do and we all got to know the camera crew really well ,which made us more comfortable in front of them.

I liked being able to show what I was doing at the race track to some of my friends who had no idea about drag racing. When the Driving Force film crew followed me to school that was a whole other deal getting into my personal life and that was a little hectic. It was still a lot of fun.

We put it on hold after Eric Medlen's crash. We wanted to really focus on safety and not have a lot of distractions. Driving Force was great at educating new fans and telling our story but after we lost Eric we really wanted to just make the race cars safer and race them. The Eric Medlen Project and John Medlen have done so much good stuff. They saved my dad's life with the changes they made and we are all so thankful but we know there is more to be done.

If we got offered the opportunity to do a show again, it would be fun to show the audience everything that has changed with my family and in the world of racing. When I was in high school, my life was about going out with my friends. I still like to go out with my friends but I am also focused on getting my degree and really building my racing career. It is not all about fun and games anymore. I know I have to keep my head on straight and figure out what I want to do in life.

If we had the TV show back I think it would be good to show the other side of us girls and how much we have grown up and how serious we are about driving. We were serious when we were doing the show but now I think we have a much better perspective. I think viewers would really enjoy seeing that.

Source USAtoday.com
